Initial Ideas

After I had done some ground research for the project I decided that portait illustration was the way forward. To ensure I discovered my strengths and explored a vast range of materials I researched into some illustrative artists.

I was instantly drawn to Esra Roise’s work due to the explosions of colour. Using ink and acrylic paint I colored the clothing part of the illustration. I used a thin fineliner to achieve the detail of the hair and face, this was developed successfully and I feel these individually would make very interesting outcomes later on. When using the ink I added water to the page then ink on top, the more ink the wider it spread, I had to control the ratio of water:ink. I decided to create a pencil illustration too, I feel the two ways of creation are both as effective.

Garance Dore again focuses on fashion and portrait illustration. She has a more simplified way of working and her images are  mainly  black and   white with an  occasional splash of colour. Looking at Garance Dore's work allowed   for me to  realise how facial illustrations  are created and what determines a typical portrait. Using bond awed,  material, stitch,  acetate and paint   I created  some  more tactile  illustrations. As well as this I scanned  some of the  pen and  ink illustrations into  Photoshop to make a repeat pattern, which continues to display the strength of the illustration even at such a smaller size.

Lisolette Watkins uses Adobe illustrator to create her portrait illustrations. She has a very distinctive approach to her work which I thought would be interesting to work with. I recreated one of her portraits (shown below) and using gradients help add the professional outcome Watkins achieves. At this stage in the project I thought it was important to make my work more tactile and experiment with a range of materials. Her work includes many lines, the images I created (from below right) show how I review and refinded my work to extend the development of it further, not only did I draw the illustration, I then copied it onto acetate to paint behind for a more colourful piece. I too made it into a digital illustration which I made a repeat pattern with, along side a portrait illustration I painted A3 size, shown below.
